Today’s science – tomorrow’s scientists

Amazing Science | STEM for Girls | Mental Health

Sciencevega.com is founded on three guiding principles, the first of which is showcasing amazing, up to the minute science from around the world. Science is an incredible field. The discoveries made today form the basis of tomorrow’s research. The everchanging landscape of our understanding is a wonderful place where daily advancements in our collective knowledge can both amaze and inspire us to go forward.

But for science to reach its true potential, it needs to be accessible. Science learning must excite and intrigue just as much as it teaches the fundamentals. At sciencevega.com we make this happen because we feature today’s science for tomorrow’s scientists.

If you are working through your physics and learning about spectroscopy, surely it would be more interesting if you realised it could be used to identify the density of a planet from lightyears away? Perhaps you are hard at work trying to understand DNA in biology, so what would you make of research that charts the progression of a particular community of Neanderthals thousands of years ago using their DNA?

And through the showcasing of fascinating research, sciencevega.com aims to fulfil its second guiding principle; encouraging STEM take-up amongst girls. Areas of the science world are still dominated by boys as they have traditionally been for decades. That should no longer be the case. Discovering a new pristine reef off the Galapagos Islands? A female PhD student worked on that. Potentially discovering what dark matter is made of? That was led by a female astrophysicist. Your life choices should never be dictated to you by your gender.

Sciencevega.com’s final founding principle is helping the mental health of our young people. School pupils have never before faced the sometimes overwhelming pressures on young minds in today’s superfast world. Four years on and students are still adversely affected by lockdown. Children as young as four displayed a recognition of covid during the pandemic; today they have yet to reach secondary school, but when they do, they will encounter the benefits and the pitfalls of social media. The effect of the early 2020s will be impacting young people for the rest of the decade and into the 2030s.

So sciencevega.com will feature articles on the mental health of young people. It will do so in a manner that is non-judgemental but that allows someone concerned about how they are feeling to understand that they are not alone. If we can help one struggling individual at sciencevega.com, it will have been worth it. We intend to help many, many more.

Today’s Science – Tomorrow’s Scientists

ABOUT US

ScienceVega and its accompanying website, sciencevega.com, exist to bring today’s science to tomorrow’s scientists. And it will do this in a way which is completely free to both school and pupil. The pathway from GCSE to A-level to degree to scientific career is not always obvious. Quite often it is ambiguous and not enough is done to show a fourteen-year-old the possibilities open to them in a decade’s time.

Many may harbour the vague idea of ‘saving the whales’, but how many know how to get there? How many realise that as they go along their focus might change? The draw of the ocean may remain, but how many realise that instead of studying whales, they actually add to our knowledge of disappearing corals in the Pacific Ocean? Or the marked drop off in populations of crustaceans unique to Western Australia? Or examining fish behaviours in the Indian Ocean? But those careers are there and ScienceVega will showcase them, along with the scientists, both established professors at the top of their field and young PhD scientists just starting out on their career paths.

Should you wish to advertise with us, and help this venture to continue to reach our young scientists, please contact: office@sciencevega.com
